The NC State Fair in My Own Words

By Jenny | October 22, 2005

Nathan already gave a brief description of our fair experience, but I wanted to expound upon that. We really had a great time with our friends, David, Desi, and Tom. Tom’s birthday is Monday, and he wanted us to go with them to the fair for his birthday gift. I haven’t been to a fair since 2003 when we were still living in Florida, and that was the Clay County Agricultural Fair. Ahh, what memories. Who could ever forget all the pigs!! Leslie and Megan and I (along with most of our cousins) raised pigs (notice I said “raised” not “raced”) in 4-H. While this “hobby” sometimes brought a little teasing from our citified friends, the money we earned from auctioning the pigs off paid for my down payment on my Civic as well as most of my college at Word of Life. So it was like taking a walk down Memory Lane last night as we strolled through the livestock exhibits with smelly pigs, cows, chickens, rabbits, goats, and horses. Do I miss raising pigs? Not one bit. I’m glad I did it, but I don’t have a desire to do it again. Enough about pigs.

I had three favorites at the fair. First, the food. The NC State Fair is HUGE (or for Megan, gargantuan)! We didn’t have a map, so we just walked and walked to find the things we were looking for. That meant passing by hundreds of food vendors. There was pizza everywhere, burgers, fries, nachos, sausage, Philly cheese steak sandwiches, ice cream, fried twinkies, fried candy bars, apple cider, and of course, funnel cakes. While I only indulged myself with a slice of pizza and a funnel cake, taking in all the smells was wonderful. Another of my favorite things was the craft and hobby exhibits. I enjoyed looking at the neat little crafts and things…I even found a cute wooden choo-choo train for the little boys I take care of. They’ll love it!! The crafts exhibit had a little bit of everything - from hand-made kaleidoscopes to pottery to quilts, etc. My other favorite part of the fair was the plant and garden area. There were SO MANY plants and flowers, and it was absolutely BEAUTIFUL!! I’m looking forward to next October just to go the fair again.

Well, that about sums it up. The fair had some really nice fireworks at the end that were fun to watch. It started sprinkling as we were watching the fireworks, then it started raining as we headed to the truck. Praise the Lord it was dry most of the night! The weather here has been so pleasant lately with a touch of fall in the air.

I hope everyone is doing well. We’re really looking forward to seeing you all at Thanksgiving.
