Great is Thy Faithfulness

By Jenny | November 17, 2006

Some of you may already know that on Tuesday, the most incredible dad in the whole world (my father) was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. What a blow to our family! We’ve never been through a trial like this, but what an overwhelming response we have seen from the Body of Christ. My sisters and parents and I have cried, shared encouraging Scripture with one another, and faced the harsh reality of this illness called cancer. But in the midst of this family crisis, God is doing some amazing things. Isn’t He just like that? Before Dad’s diagnosis, we all felt God individually preparing our hearts for a trial. My sister, Megan, reminded me before we had the test results of Job 2:10, “Shall we accept good from the Lord and not adversity?” God has been very good to my family, and we are so grateful for the sense of peace He has given us during this difficult time. While we have a diagnosis, we are waiting for Dad to get an appointment at the Mayo Clinic before we have an idea as to the prognosis and treatment plan. Our week has been crazy as we have been bombarded (in the greatest sense of the word) with phone calls, emails, and letters of prayer, encouragement, and support. My parents have made an impact on so many lives, and it has been humbling to see the response from our friends and family. I have recently become fascinated with old hymns, and I want to leave you with the words of a song that has been of great encouragement to me this week.

Great is thy faithfulness, O God my father,
There is no shadow of turning with thee:
Thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not,
As thou hast been, thou for ever wilt be.

Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon and stars in their courses above,
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth;
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for to-day and bright hope for to-morrow:
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

Great is thy faithfulness, O God my father,
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed thy hand hath provided,
Great is thy faithfulness, Lord unto me.

    Jenny, I know the pain cancer can bring to a family. About 3 years ago I watched my grandfather fight and beat cancer. It was only the Lord’s strength that sustained my family through that and it is awesome to see your family already relying on your faith.

    I don’t personally know your father, but I know what a great daughter he raised and thus he must be one heck of a man. My prayers are with you and your family.

    Cancer is scary……it’s hard to go through, but with the love of Christ anything compared can seem so small. Praise God for your love for one another and a fmaily that is sticking together through this time. Know that you are being prayed for. God is amazing!! love you guys and please let me know if there’s anything else I could be praying for.
